Ransomware Is On The Rise

Updated: Sep 6, 2021

ALERT SUMMARY

An article by the New York Times recently reported rising Ransomware attacks across businesses and cities alike; costing them money and precious time, and sometimes even their whole business. This can also affect you as an individual, since more and more attacks are occurring to personal devices.

So, what is Ransomware? Ransomware is a software virus that locks up your computer or other electronics and can only be unlocked when you pay the hacker money, or another form of payment. Once the payment is made, the hacker will then unlock access back to you, essentially holding your data hostage.

Recent data shows that these kinds of attacks are on the rise, and a steep rise at that. According to Wikipedia, there were over 180 million Ransomware attacks in the first six months of 2018. This marks a 229% increase over this same time frame in 2017. Similarly, according to Emisoft, a Ransomware security firm, there were over 200,000 organizations that had been hacked in 2019, a 41% increase from 2018. That is really something to be aware of, especially since the average payout to get the data back from hackers was around $80,000 or more.

This has caused some businesses to shut down due to the cost of not only buying back their stolen data, but then rebuilding it back to normal use as well. Luckily, there are ways to help protect yourself from these nasty Ransomware attacks, see below.
