Amazon Sued Over Alexa Child Recordings

Updated: Sep 2, 2021

ALERT SUMMARY

Alexa has just been sued by 8 states for the recording of children's voices and how this was not disclosed as a feature in the privacy fine print. The suits allege that Amazon did not obtain parent permission to keep track of a child's voice (called a voiceprint) that could potentially accumulate a "vast level of detail about the child's life".

1. Two US cases contend that Amazon does not have parent consent to keep a minor's voiceprint permanently.

2. Concern is around the collection of the child's voice recordings over time and the potential use of that information like passing it on to third-parties.

3. Amazon has a subscription service for parents to help manage a minor's use of their technology.
